We Believe You — And We’re Here to Help

Sexual abuse and assault are never the fault of the survivor. And yet, many people feel shame over what they experienced; they feel different. Sadly, there is often a stigma associated with being abused, and this can make it difficult for victims to seek help. It doesn’t need to be, however. At Aspen, our counsellors are experienced in treating survivors of sexual abuse and assault, and they’re ready and waiting to help. Your story is valid, and we offer a safe, confidential environment in which you can tell us your story and the effects it’s had on your life. It doesn’t matter if it happened a long time ago or just recently, whether you were an adult or a child, our therapy service for survivors of sexual abuse and assault is for all survivors.

What to Expect from Sexual Abuse Counselling

When you begin counselling for sexual abuse or assault, you can be assured that your therapist will provide a safe, pressure-free and confidential environment in which you can discuss what happened to you and the impact that the abuse or assault has had on your life. You don’t have to tell all in the first session if you’re not comfortable doing so; our counsellors understand the importance of building trust at your own pace and that everyone manages trauma in their own way. You can be confident that this is a judgement-free environment, and our counsellors will help you manage any shame or guilt that you may be feeling.

Our sex abuse therapists will also equip you with tools for emotional regulation; for example, they will help you develop skills to cope with triggers associated with the trauma of your assault. PTSD is a common response to sexual abuse or assault, and your counsellors will work through PTSD symptoms and how to manage them.

Our Trauma-Informed Therapeutic Methods

There are many different methodologies when it comes to treating survivors of sexual abuse or assault, and our experienced counsellors will choose a method that’s best suited to your situation and tailor it accordingly.

It’s common to have gaps in memory after trauma. Therapy doesn’t require you to recall every detail. The focus is on how you’re feeling now, how the past may be affecting you, and on building coping skills to move forward.

No. You control what you share and when. Therapy should feel safe and at your pace. Sometimes just talking about feelings, without going into details, is enough to help.

You usually need to provide basic information to begin therapy. If privacy is a concern, you can discuss confidentiality rules with your therapist before starting. In general, all therapy is confidential.
